The Wismar Bay

The Free and Hanseatic city of Wismar used to be a centre of maritime shipping, which still shows today. The entire city has been declared World Heritage Site by the UNESCO in 2002. It represents a typical seaport with its colourful townhouses, the historic harbour, big storehouses, brick cathedrals, baroque buildings and a central market square.

The Wismar bay was formed by ice age glaciers and now is a popular beach destination throughout the year. It stretches between the Baltic resort of Boltenhagen and the island Poel and offers some beautiful sandy beaches, spectacular cliff lines, barrier beaches, spits and salt marshes.  And if the weather should let you down Wismar’s big aqua amusement park “Wonnemar” still is a fun day out for the whole family.
