The natural formation of the lakes around Schwerin dates back to the melting of glaciers at the end of the last ice age period. The melt water made its way from the north to the south of Germany and Europe like a mountain stream, thus forming the big lake Schweriner See, many smaller lakes alongside and the characteristic landscape of this area. It is home to eagles, beavers, otters, kingfishers, cranes, red kites and white storks. Not far from the eastern shore of the Schweriner See there is the Nature Conservation Station Karnin. The Ramper Moor (Rampe Marshes), Drispether Moor, Grabower Moor, Kritzower Berge (Kritzow Hills) and the Görslower Ufer (Görslow Shore) along the lake Schweriner See belong to the most beautiful landscapes of the region.
