The nature preservation centre in Karnin
In the village of Karnin, where the Warnow river flows, there is a fascinating nature reserve. Alders, ash trees and willows grow in the forest along the lakeshore, whereas beeches, oak trees and conifers can be found higher up in the woods. If you take a closer look, you will discover flowers, plants and herbs like Queen Anne’s lace or centaury in the meadows. Further across the bridge over the Warnow river you will see the overgrown ruins of the old windmill of Riechenberg. The nature conservation centre organises guided tours, conferences and school projects on request. A picnic area for barbecues, overnight accommodation and a canoe pier are also provided.
The archaeological trail in Kritzow
The archaeological trail is not far from Schwerin, situated in the hills of Kritzow. It is about 7 kilometres long and leads visitors through the region of a prehistoric settlement and early culture. Visitors can still see the ruins of a medieval court, an old cairn grave from the Neolithic Period (New Stone Age) and several other cairns that date back to the Bronze Age. All these attractions are surrounded by an abundance of animals and plants, such as cotton grass, thrifts, callas, beavers, grass snakes, toads and cranes.
