Maritime atmosphere in big-city scenery

Hanseatic city of Rostock and Warnemünde

Büro Hanse Sail/Lutz Zimmermann

Rostock – The city by the sea. Once Rostock was the most significant city of the Hanse and has still today kept a lot from its charm.
To this day, the Gothic churches, the monasteries and the town gates of this historic centre of the Hanseatic city remind us of its power and wealth in medieval times. The city of seven towers, which is the largest city in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is situated at the river Warnow and the Baltic Sea and blends youthful charm and modern architecture with Hanseatic tradition. The North German brick Gothic - which is seen in magnificent churches, town gates, merchants’ houses and the medieval city walls - dominates the townscape of Rostock.
The Zum Heiligen Kreuz convent contains the treasures of the Museum of Cultural History and is a gem in itself because it tells a lot of its old history with their cloisters, the church and the tiny nuns’ closets.
Have you ever seen an astronomical clock? If not, you have to go to the Marien's church in which you can get a closer look at the famous building. In the Rostocker Zoo – the largest zoological garden on the German Baltic coast – everyone have something to experience.
Definitely well worth a visit is the IGA Park at the Warnow riverbank with its range of activities. There you will find a freight ship housing the Rostock Shipbuilding and Maritime Museum.
Enjoy the yearly HanseSail which is a special tourism attraction. Warnemünde
Especially on sunny and summer days many visitors populate the modern seaside resort of Warnemünde. Enjoy the sea from the wide sandy shores, smell the invigorating sea breeze and appreciate the unique coastal scenery whilst walking.
Impressive cruise liners, concerts of the spa orchestra and even seals splashing around in the sea water will bring diversity to your holiday.
You can still imagine the romantic fishing village of yore alongside Warnemünde's old fishing harbour "Alter Strom". Narrow gabled houses, once the habitation of fishermen and sailors, line the old port's entrance.
Modern passenger ships set off on their harbour tours from here, while blue and red cutters sail the Baltic Sea to fish. To try delicious-smelling smoked fish or crunchy herring rolls you have to go to the fish market at the “Alter Strom”.
The lighthouse, the piers and sailing ships on the horizon dominate Warnemünde's unique maritime scenery.
