Segelboote vor dem Schweriner Schloss

With 21 km in length and 6 km in width, the lake Schweriner See is the second largest in Northern Germany and immensely popular with water sports enthusiasts. The “Paulsdamm” (Paul’s dam) divides the lake into two parts: one is called the “Innensee” (inner lake) and the other is the “Außensee” (outer lake). Various coves, the skyline of the city and the beautiful Palace characterise the southern part of the lake. In order to visit the city centre, just dock at the pier of the 'Weiße Flotte' and follow the signposts. There are two islands in the Innensee: Ziegelwerder is a nature reserve and cannot be visited. Kaninchenwerder however offers a motorboat dock. Two other islands, Lieps and Horst, lie in the Außensee. Travellers can use the Stör canal to reach the two large rivers Elde and Elbe, leading to Hamburg and other Mecklenburg lakes. Heading north to Wismar on the Wallensteingraben, though, is only for experienced rowers, as it is a very shallow and overgrown route.

The depth of the Schweriner See averages at 21 metres. Be aware of the enormous boulder in the inner lake and a shallow bank called Goldburg. The water quality is very good, which makes it perfect for swimming. Small motorboats should not be on the water if the wind force goes beyond 3. The general speed limit is 25 km/h, and near the shore one must not exceed 8 km/h. Those areas indicated with yellow buoys are for swimming and may not be crossed by boats at all.
