The State Theatre of Mecklenburg and the State Museum stand side by side on the “Alter Garten” square. Georg Daniel designed the theatre between 1883 and 1886 following the examples of Italian Renaissance. The magnificent theatre building on the “Alter Garten” stages musicals, ballet and drama. Attached to it is the “Fritz-Reuter-stage”, where plays are performed in ‘Low German’ (a northern German dialect called “Plattdeutsch”). Every year, the highlight of Schwerin’s summer of culture is the Open Air Opera Festival known as “Schlossfestspiele”, presented by the Schwerin State Theatre. Theatre performances have a very long tradition in the city and we can now look back on 400 years of glorious theatre culture. Already in 1753 Conrad Ekhof founded the first German Academy for Actors in Schwerin.
