The church "Schelfkirche"

The lovely “Schelfkirche” on the “Schelfmarkt” square is the only real baroque church in West Mecklenburg. Where since 1238 there used to stand the St. Nikolai church, the chief engineer Jakob Reutz decided to construct another one. The construction took him five years, from 1708 until 1713. The basic shape of the church is that of a cross, with a short foot and a prominent steeple to the west. A Friese-organ and an altarpiece by Gaston Lenthe, the court painter, are part of the interior. The members of the ducal family are buried in the church’s crypt, among them Sophie Louise, Queen of Prussia, who died in 1735.
