Churches in Schwerin

© Christoph Müller

When Schwerin was founded in 1160 it was almost immediately made seat of a bishop and a hotspot to christianize the slavic tribes in the area. From the second half of the 13th century thousands of pilgrims were coming to Schwerin from near and far to see a holy relic inside the basilica. It was a precious stone to embody a drop of blood of Jesus Christ, which turned the church into one of the most important places of pilgrimage in northern Germany until the relique was destroyed during the protestant reformation.

The churches of Schwerin play an important role in the cities skyline - with the great Cathedral overlooking it all.
